Education on Corona Virus

What is Coronavirus (COVID -19) ?

Coronavirus or COVID-19 is a new infectious disease that is caused by a newly discovered virus that mainly affects the respiratory system. The disease was first reported in Wuhan city in China Hubei Province in December 2019. The virus is highly infectious and spreads fast from one person to another through contact with an infected person, particularly when they cough or even sneeze. It can also be spread when a person touches a surface that has the virus on it, then touches the mouth, nose or eyes. According to World Health Organization, most people who are suffering from the virus will most likely experience a moderate or mild respiratory illness that will recover within days after contracting without any need for individual medical attention (World Health Organization, 2020). The organization warns that older people and those who have any underlying condition like chronic respiratory disease, cardiovascular diseases or any other chronic infection are likely to develop severe illness (World Health Organization, 2020).

Symptoms and Treatment

The most common symptoms of the disease include dry cough, fever, and tiredness. In severe cases, a person may experience headaches and difficulty in breathing. The best way that one can prevent or reduce the chances of contracting the infectious disease is to have information about the virus, the condition that it causes and also the ways that it spreads. One can prevent infection through washing hands with soap, using sanitizers, or washing hands with alcohol-based rubs frequently without touching the face. As the disease spreads mostly through saliva droplets from an infected person, one must apply respiratory etiquette, which includes coughing in a flexed elbow instead of coughing while facing another person.

There is no specific vaccination that can be targeted towards treating coronavirus. In the case of extreme cases, people may need supportive care that would enable them to breath. If a person has mild symptoms, it would be sufficient to stay at home until fully recovered. These symptoms can be relieved through keeping warm, resting and sleeping, using a home modifier, and drinking plenty of liquids.

Protecting Others

The best way to protect oneself and others is through avoiding crowded places, washing hands with plenty of water and soap, and drinking a lot of fluids. If someone feels that their immune system is compromised or you are suffering from other chronic infection, it would be advisable to avoid contact with others. If one suspects that they might have contracted the disease, it would be imperative if they observed quarantine measures to ensure they do not spread the virus to others (Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 2020).

Healthcare nurses are at risk of contracting the disease from isolated people who have tested positive and have been set in isolation. As such, it is vital for them to always monitor their health by wearing protective gears whenever attending these people to prevent the chances of cross-infection. It is also essential to always have tests frequently, mainly when dealing with many patients, like currently in the USA, Italy, and Spain. This would help eliminate any chances of contracting the disease while at work.

The best way to prevent contraction or to spread the virus is to stay at home until the disease has been contained. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, CDC, staying home is the best option unless seeking medical care. It is also essential to stay away from people who are showing symptoms, and mainly if one is vulnerable or has higher chances of contracting the virus (Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 2020).
