Technology continues to rapidly evolve and has changed the way we work, the way we live, often better, and how we interact with computing technologies. If we do not keep up with change, understand our customers and adapt to disruptive technologies, we will no longer exist as the company we have become. 

This week let’s talk about IBM as a success, failure and regaining success through rethinking technology.  At the beginning of computing and before the Internet, IBM was often admired as an organization you would want to work for. 

Then came the rise in internet, technologies and companies like Microsoft and Apple who worked hard to develop consumer-grade electronics. Why did IBM survive?  They filed bankruptcy in 1999 yet they continue to lead innovation in Artificial Intelligence (AI). 

Utilizing a name from the past, their AI engine is based in the name Watson from their previous CEO.  Many thought that name could lead to a disaster, but they spun this being a super-intelligent platform and have continued to thrive in their refocused markets.  From data center technology to AI, they are a large player in today’s ingenuity.

We need to assess IBM’s past and present and determine what they did to lose their competitive advantage and then regain a competitive advantage after going through bankruptcy. 

As IBM transitioned out of Bankruptcy, define Porter’s three generic strategies that IBM used or should have used to redefine their focused strategies, market, and differentiation. Hint: Look at Figure 1.25 in your book. 

Does IBM have the ability to thrive and survive during the next industrial revolution? Using their company website, assess their mission and vision to define how they will be able to survive the Internet of Things (IoT) revolution.
