he advent of surplus food production ushered in not only the marvels of the ancient world but also pronounced social inequality. In this paper, you will compare the cultural trajectories of social inequality between two ancient states . Use the case studies in Fagan and Durrani as a starting place to choose archaeological cultures, and then develop your ideas through academic research. Your academic writing, appropriate sources and citations all contribute to your grade.
In selecting cultures, chose two that you feel had similar pathways to social inequality and state this as an hypothesis. Then develop your paper to present archaeological research and data to support your hypothesis. Your evidence should be grounded in a clear concept of an archaeological culture.
Your paper should include the following points:
Describe the physical location and cultural context of both case studies.
For each culture, suggest socio-cultural dynamics that contributed to the origin, development and perpetuation of social inequality. Consider evidence for unequal distribution of wealth, power, and authority. Pay particular attention to system of power and evidence for social classes. How do we identify elites vs. commoners in the archaeological record of your two cultures? Consider the role of social institutions, such as leadership structures, legal systems, religions, educational systems, and economics justified inequality in both societies. What evidence did archaeologists present to document these institutions ?
Finally, critically reflect on how social inequality emerged in the ancient world and its legacy in our own cultures today. Consider the following questions:
What social classes do you feel are present today and how do the social institutions and power structures of our own society contribute to them?
Where do you see yourself within our social order?
How does reflecting on the origins of social inequality contribute to understanding your own position and that of others who you feel possess both more and less social power than yourself within our social structure? Assignment
