According to the idea of observational learning, bad things in our world are largely learned. This would include racism, ageism, and sexism. In other words, we learned from significant others in our lives how to treat members of different ethnicities, or how to treat members of the opposite sex.

Director Jennifer Seibel-Newsom has dedicated her career to tackling the subject of sexism in the media and amongst ourselves. Her first film, Miss Representation, discussed the portrayal of women in the media, and how to change the idea that women are objects or subservient. Often we think of sexism as a female problem — women being treated poorly by men. However, her new film, The Mask You Live In, shows the raw deal men receive in terms of stereotypes and expectations. And yes, this is learned too.
