Stereotypes

As the text discusses, there are lots of ways that stereotypes can develop and get reinforced. Let’s see if we can find some examples of https://web.cortland.edu/russellk/courses/prjdis/html/scudst.htm
Select a TV or movie and identify an example of stereotype reinforcement in either a character or plot element.

What to post?

Do not begin by Googling “stereotype in media” and copying from the internet. Challenge yourself to watch a TV shows or movie you have seen before with your new knowledge and identify a stereotype in either a character or behavioral scene. Then, post your assessment of the following:

What is the stereotype and how is it reinforced?
In your opinion, what is the effect of such a portrayal? Explain your position.
Why do you think the media relies on stereotypes?
If possible, post a pic or clip related to what you analyzed. For example, I posted a pic above of the character Apu from the Simpsons, who some have https://www.cnn.com/2018/04/09/entertainment/apu-the-simpsons-response/index.html

Stereotypes

In the episode of According to Jim: Jim Almighty, Jim complains to God about women. He begins by stating that he would like to the moron who created women. Viewers come across various stereotypes that are associated with both genders. Among these stereotypes are women’s tendency towards socializing. The other stereotypes that appear are physical, sexual, and emotional traits.

However, three traits stand out in the film. One of the traits is that women are stereotyped as people with strong emotional traits. When God grants the wish of making men more like women, Jim complains of how he is supposed to handle all the work for a dinner party by himself (Garner Jr., 2008). Additionally, women are stereotyped to have emotional traits, and this is evident through their desire for compliments. They are shown to get emotional at both happy or sad moments, as seen in the film.

The other trait is about men’s tendency to get physical. In the beginning of the film, one of the girls who exhibited the behavior of most men came and pushed aside the man sitting for them to watch a football game. More so, the kind of sports associated with men is physical. Near the end, when God was about to snap his finger to do away with the football game, Jim begs him not to, giving a clear indication of men’s physical nature and preferences (Garner Jr., 2008). Also, Jim’s wife recommends him for various things and mentions that he did not start a fight that night. This statement also reflects on men’s stereotype of being physical.

The third stereotype is about sexual traits for both genders. In the beginning of the film, Jim is given powers by God and starts by giving big boobs to women. After that, Jim is excited when he is about to go to bed with his wife (Garner Jr., 2008). These instances, among others stereotype men’s sexual traits and high preferences. I think that these stereotypes depict the actual behavior of males and females—the reason being the fact that people can relate various acts to a specific gender.

Response to Blake Lendic

Hello Blake, I find your post interesting, and I would like to comment on a few things regarding the post. I agree with you on the modern practices that the majority of women undergo in efforts to acquire an excellent body shape or other features. Also, and to a great extent, I concur with your sentiments regarding the roles of women in the house. In the majority of families, women do most of the household chores. They put the needs of other family members ahead of theirs, and for that, I think they need great appreciation. On the part about men, I think it is also true. Therefore, I find your post interesting, and even more appealing from the fact that you can relate to real-life experiences that you have come across.
