Does the opening reflect a key event that motivates your chosen character?
Is the character identified early in the monologue, using natural language?
Is the language precise and controlled, including the use of any planned colloquialism?
Does the language allow the characters to come alive and sound authentic?
Is the listener able to determine your portrayal and interpretation of this character?
Do you establish a clear voice for the character that reveals their current feelings and general persona?
Is any contrast used for emphasis? E.g. Contrast in characters’ actions/thoughts.
Does the character reveal a number of related thoughts, worries and emotions?
Has the listener entered the character’s life and seen images from their past that were important for them? (Character development/motivation)
Are links to the character’s social and cultural attitudes, values and beliefs clear?
Do these social and cultural links further our understanding of the characters’ identity?
Is information held back? Gaps for the reader to fill in?
Are all of the elements necessary, with no need for compression, e.g. no places where the pace is too slow, reader is confused, too many words?
Are the character’s conclusions foreshadowed in a subtle way?
Is the ending resonant? (Effective/Allows reader to reflect)
Does the monologue flow quickly and well, with natural links between sentences, paragraphs and scenes?
Is figurative language used, and does it heighten the text?
Does the monologue reference a number of events from throughout the stimulus?
Does the sequence of these events reflect the development of the character’s emotions and reflections?
Is the range of vocabulary discriminating? Appropriate – right words in the right places?
