MODES OF REASONING 1730D
ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAY ASSIGNMENT
Value: First version 30% Due: April 9
Directions: Choose one of the following positions and write an essay arguing either FOR or AGAINST that position, following the directions for an argumentative essay outlined in lecture. For example, if you choose topic #3, the thesis statement of your essay can be either “The Canadian government should decriminalize prostitution for workers and clients aged 19 and above” OR “The Canadian government should NOT decriminalize prostitution for workers and clients aged 19 and above.”
1. Private prisons should be abolished.
2. Corporations should be required by law to pay the cost of repairing any environmental damage they cause.
3. The Canadian government should decriminalize prostitution for workers and clients aged 19 and above.
4. Propose a topic and thesis statement, subject to approval and/or revision by your instructor (me). Submit it by email on or before March 15. You CANNOT use an alternate topic unless it has been approved by the instructor.
In the course of researching your essay, you may choose to make your position more specific. For example, if you are writing on topic #2, you may wish to specify limits to legal liability for environmental damage, such as limiting it to damage that is either known by or could reasonably have been foreseen by the corporation that caused it. You may also wish to specify and delimit the meaning of “environmental damage.”
