*You must have access to this book for the assignment.

This paper involves an application of all things pertaining to art criticism (all things
learned from the text, specifically. There is a chapter in the text featuring different types of art criticism). Early in the course, students will learn about the differences between structuralist, post-structuralist, formalist, ideological, psychoanalytical, deconstructionist, visual culture criticism, phenomenologist and feminist criticism (96-102).

Criticism is a way to take art seriously. When we apply a critical review to a work, we consider process, intent, imagery, material, where it fits into culture, the ideas that shaped it, and how it makes one feel. This is to be done individually, where you will apply lessons learned from the class about art criticism (pg. 96-102).

It is the student’s responsibility to pick an artwork and type of criticism to write about. One may choose a work from the text, or a work from outside the text (i.e., one seen in a gallery or a museum, and one that can be researched, and has possibly been reviewed before by an art critic). The paper should be 3-4 pages in length.

This paper will be in APA style format, including a works cited page.

*Assignment Details:

This paper will be based off Damien Hirst’s “For the Love of God” (p.56) in the book. The paper should be at least 3 pages & in APA format.
