TOPIC:

SCMG605 W5DR- Scheduling

INSTRUCTIONS:

What types of scheduling decisions are management likely to encounter in the following operations? Describe the scheduling decisions in terms of the types of resources to be scheduled and the associated customers or jobs scheduled: Hospital, University, Moviemaking, and Make-to-order factory.

DISCUSSION POST GUIDELINES:

Write a 250 word discussion post. Post should incorporate concepts and materials that you have researched and learned this week. Please include a minimum of one attribute for an internet resource to support your findings in addition to a citation from your textbook. These postings are research based and should be based on what you learned in addition to your own experiences and insights. Opinions are allowed, however they should not constitute the majority of the initial discussion posting. Please note that for all Discussion postings where an author is quoted or paraphrased should have an attribution to the source or sources placed at the bottom of the discussion posting.

DISCUSSION RESPONSE GUIDELINES:

Write two 100 word responses to fellow classmates. Please note that for all Discussion postings where an author is quoted or paraphrased should have an attribution to the source or sources placed at the bottom of the discussion posting. REMEMBER to always ask questions in responses to promote discussion points.

Good evening class, for this week we are to touch on scheduling processes across 4 separate industries. As it describes in this week reading “scheduling decisions allocate available capacity or resources to jobs, activities, tasks, or customers over time” (Schroeder, 2020). When considering this in either a large or small hospital scheduling practices have to take into account of their resources from personnel, rooms, equipment across multiple shifts to account for the hospital’s actual capacity before scheduling patients in. Hospital staff must understand their best- and worst-case availability factors with all of their resources.

When considering scheduling at universities, our text discusses batch scheduling. While it can be associated with hospitals as well batch scheduling “the plan for assuming work to necessary resources” (Schroeder, 2020) is similar to the “military processing” of hurry up and wait. Schools have to account for similar resources such as teachers and classrooms but the customers or students are only with one student or classroom at a time so resources could be combined at times and not as narrow a scheduling margin like hospitals.

Also similar to that is the management of movie making. In which has a more definitive schedule and resources can be moved around more freely as the scheduling time frame is up to the producers to manage. Though the resources are more fluid, there are still many considerations depending on equipment and locations could incur costs the longer the movie schedule extends.

Made to order scheduling falls under the term discussed as finite capacity scheduling which establishes a work schedule to be produced in a certain time period. Scheduling this work depending on resources provides more knowns as your resources are defined per order. You can allocate resources dependent on orders.

Thanks,

Aaron

Scheduling is extremely important within a supply chain because it creates more seamless and efficient production throughout a business. A robust sustainable supply chain must make sure the logistics process in regard to scheduling is optimal for the best results. Doing this will allow for many competitive advantages within business operations. It can help lower risk, optimize workflow, and decrease supply chain disruptions (Reinblatt, 2019) Hospitals use scheduling for resources such like operating rooms, specialized equipment, and nursing staff. The jobs that are linked with scheduling in a hospital would be surgical procedures, diagnostic tests, and patient care needs. When making scheduling choices in a hospital items to consider are assigning operating rooms and equipment for surgeries; this can be done based off urgency and specialist availability. Additionally scheduling nursing shifts are a top concern to ensure adequate staff for different departments to ensure patient needs with efficient resource utilization goals are being met. University resources needing scheduling are classrooms, faculty members, libraries, labs, and student advisors. Items needing scheduling at a college are courses which entails allocating classrooms to courses with adequate space requirements to fit faculty schedules. Additionally, considerations must be made for library and lab hours based on student needs and staff availability. In movie-making the resources to consider are actors, camera crew, filming locations, props and costumes. Scheduling must be done for the following decisions and jobs; filming scenes in a specific sequence; sequencing scenes to minimize set changes and actor availability issues. Scheduling filming based on actor schedules, location permits, and weather forecasts. Assigning camera crews and ensuring prop/costume availability for each scene. In a make-to-order factory scheduling is done for Production machines, raw materials, workers with specific skills. Prioritizing production must be done in scheduling for orders based on deadlines and resource availability. Scheduling machines use to efficiently meet production timelines. It is also important to assign workers with the necessary skills to handle specific jobs.

Thanks,

Lindsey
