Discussion 2

To replace class discussion and debate, students will participate in weekly written discussion forums. The instructor will post weekly discussion forum questions in relation to an assigned article, podcast, case study, or video. Each student must post his or her response in the form of a thoughtful, well-articulated 600-word short essay

To receive full credit, the responses must go beyond simply agreeing with the post. The response must accomplish one of three things:

  1. Expand upon or add to the argument
  2. Counter the argument with an alternative point
  3. Explain how the argument changed your prior thinking

Participation in the discussion forum counts for attendance each week.

If you would prefer to read rather than listen to a podcast, you can read the longer article that these podcasts are based on instead:  The Land that Failed to Fail https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2018/11/18/world/asia/china-rules.html

In a discussion post, respond to ONE of the following questions. Or, you may posit and respond to your own question, as long as it is academic, insightful, and related to the topic. Please write your post in the form of a short essay rather than in Q&A format. Feel free to bring in additional resources to update the information from the podcast, though be sure that your response thoroughly and directly addresses one of the questions posed. Remember that the original post is due Thursday at 11:30 pm and the replies are due Sunday at 11:30 pm.

Liberal economic thought holds that free market economies stimulate greater economic growth, whereas state-directed economies stifle growth. Discuss this assertion in relation to China. Does China’s case disprove this theory? Why or why not?

Liberal economic thought also holds that a democratic political system is an essential condition for sustained economic progress.  Discuss this assertion in relation to China. Does China’s case disprove this theory? Why or why not?

The US played a major role in China’s rise into an economic powerhouse, but as the series suggests, this economic rise did not result in free markets, press, internet, or democracy. With China’s economic power continuing to rise, how should the US respond? You can respond from the perspective of US businesses or US foreign policy.

How do cultural differences and values present challenges for US-based international businesses doing business in China? What approaches would you recommend to US business leaders in order to be successful doing business in China in the long term?
