- How does Rousseau define the General Will? How does he define the Will of All? What are the differences between the two, and which does Rousseau tell us to follow? Why?
- Rousseau argues that property creates civil society when he says “The first man who, having enclosed a piece of ground, bethought to himself of saying this is mine, and found people simple enough to believe him, was the real founder of civil society.” In The Second Discourse, how does Rousseau define private property? Does Rousseau believe private property corrupts or enhances society? Why? What are two consequences of private property?
- How does Burke define prejudice? Why does he think prejudice is necessary in the face of “naked reason”? How does his defense of prejudice impact his views of democracy? For this last part, please provide three examples and explain them.
