Research Project
The research project for this class has multiple objectives:
It is designed to give you practice on information gathering (an important skill in the entrepreneurial journey).
It is designed to give you the autonomy to select a topic or topics from this course that you are interested in.
It is designed to give you exposure to an entrepreneur or an innovator to gain greater knowledge regarding topics covered in this course.
It is designed to give you autonomy in regards to the media you wish to leverage to deliver your results (paper or video presentation)
Factors to consider when deciding to interview for this project:
Does the person fit your definition of an entrepreneur?
Has the person been responsible for utilizing one or more of the ten types of innovation to create change within an organization or a community?
Do you have access to the person to ensure they can give you 1 to 2 hours of your time to perform an adequate interview?
What is the process of creating the paper/video?
You are expected to identify the key concepts from this course in which you wish to gain a deeper understanding.
Identify ‘why’ these were the topics of most importance to you. Also, provide a review of the topic/concepts that you chose.
Ensure that you also include supplemental information that was not presented in the textbook.
Once you have identified and reviewed the key concepts you plan to cover, prepare a list of questions to ask your participant. Ensure you include a copy of your interview questions as an appendix in your paper or video.
Interview your participant
Summarize the interview
Present the entire project either in paper or video form. The paper should be 3-5 pages double spaced (12 pt font). The video should be 5-7 minutes long. However, I am much less interested in the actual length than I am the quality of the information. Please include references regardless of the format you choose.
Frequently asked questions:
Are they required to own their own business? No
Can you interview a family member? Yes
Does the interview need to be in-person? No
Can I perform the interview via email? No – you can only utilize email to establish the time and format of the interview.
Can I record the interview? Yes, if you think it will help you retain the information. However, you MUST inform them that it is being recorded and be prepared for individuals to be a little less candid if they know they are being recorded. I personally try to avoid recorded interviews if possible.
Can I simply upload a recorded interview as my final project? No – not if you want a passing grade.
Can I use articles and books that were cited in the textbook? Absolutely, you just need to seek out information other than the textbook.
