Assignment Requirements:
Following the conventions of formal academic writing, write a persuasive essay that convinces readers you are a member of a discourse community. The essay must define your discourse community, introduce readers to the practices of your discourse community, and provide compelling evidence of its coherence. As the purpose of this assignment is both to practice organizing your argument logically and to grapple with developing and supporting your own ideas, please do not use any quotations or secondary sources; rather, provide evidence from your own experiences and observations.
In this essay, you are asked to think about your experience as it is shaped by language. The assignment requires you to recognize yourself as a member of a discourse community, whether you see that community as a family, neighbourhood, workplace, club, sports team, school, etc.
Be certain you include all of the following in your essay:
(a) identify your membership in a discourse community
(b) support that claim with a definition of that community and its discourse practices
(c) provide examples of that discourse
(d) explain inherent values of that community as those values are reflected in the language practices
Make your evidence specific. Readers should see not only the words and patterns of your language community, but also the events in which this discourse is used and the values implicit in the discourse.
