If it’s lacking on the part of the student, can the educator do something to increase it? The six situations below reflect potential problems in student motivation.
James often comes to class late and skips class altogether about once a week.
Lilliana is caught stealing someone’s lunch money on several occasions.
Byron always appears to be busy with his classwork, but he never seems to get his work done in the allotted time.
Shay turns in about half of her course assignments over a four-week period.
Mark says that he studies very hard for his tests, but his mind goes blank as soon as he has a test in front of him.
Sadie is a highly intelligent girl who does not try very hard and gets only minimally adequate grades.

Describe some of the possible motives underlying the student’s behavior.
Identify any unknown information (e.g., family background, peer relationships, history of academic record, attributions, etc.) that might help a teacher identify the source of the problem.
Create three (3) strategies that a teacher might use to help the student engage in more appropriate/productive behavior.
