Culture and Stereotyping-Film Review Assignment GuidelinesOne critical issue that societies and businesses face is the impact of stereotyping. This is the practice of making broad judgments about people based on generalizations related to gender, ethnicity, or culture. Stereotyping is a dangerous practice as it can cause serious relational issues between individuals and groups.
Hofstede (1997), assisted by others, identified described six basic dimensions along which human groups organize their values and behavior. These he called these 6 dimensions of culture:
1. Power Distance Index (high versus low).
2. Masculinity Versus Femininity.
3. Uncertainty Avoidance Index (high versus low).
4. Long- Versus Short-Term Orientation.
5. Indulgence Versus Restraint.
A detailed description of each dimension is provided by G. Hofstede at https://geerthofstede.com/culture-geert-hofstede-gert-jan-hofstede/6d-model-of-national-culture
This assignment is designed to allow students to explore and examine stereotyping in business via the vehicle of a 1986 comedy film by Ron Howard, Gung Ho starring Michael Keaton.

It is the story of what happens when a closed automobile factory in the Eastern US is acquired by a Japanese auto manufacturer based on an invitation from the unemployed American workers’ union management. The reason that the film was selected is that while comedic, the stereotypes portrayed are seemingly real. Perhaps that is why the film works.
It is completely possible for you, as a graduate executive to be placed in a similar situation, either domestically or internationally. It is therefore incumbent to view the film with an academic eye where stereotypes are identified, explained and measured against applicable human behavior and cultural theories. This will be a demanding assignment, so plan on engaging in it as soon as possible.
To begin the assignment, explain and then illustrate each of Hofstede’s 6 Dimensions of Culture by citing an appropriate scene from the film. Extended bullets may be used.
Then, drawing on this information as a background, in the second part of the paper prepare a case analysis from the viewpoint of an outside advisor to both sides. Use the Case Study Guidelines found in External Links. The paper must follow all APA 6ed. format guidelines.
