Violence Prevention

Community-based programs

The juvenile gang has been a problem for years among teens, families, and communities. In the video, high school students gave their perspectives on violence and its impact at school, community, and home. They gave some of the major causes of violence, such as anger and delinquent behaviors, the effects of bullying, and the effects of dysfunctional families (OpenAthens / Sign in, n.d.). Community-based programs have an important role in addressing the issue of juvenile gang violence (Spergel, 2010).

Community-based programs increase overall community safety by addressing the issue of juvenile gang violence comprehensively. They are directed to the youth who are exposed to low levels of risks and aggression and active and former gang members to change into better persons. The programs consider the factors that promote violence (Spergel, 2010).

Gang intervention specialists working with youths are placed within communities to promote safety, with their aim being gang-related violence. The specialists have knowledge and experience in gang life, which is important in gaining and maintaining trust among the former and active gang members. The trust will lead to open communication which is necessary for one’s transition from gang life to a productive life (Spergel, 2010).

Ways that juveniles’ perception of police officers can be improved

Ways in which police officers interact with people impacts people’s perception of law enforcement. These perceptions are connected to things such as crime reporting, willingness to be a witness, and crime commission. Bias training for the police officers should be implemented to improve juvenile’s perception of police officers. Biasness influences the way officers treat people even when they are determined to be fair. In America, police biasness against blacks has been reported, which leads to a disproportionate arrest. This makes the juveniles feel that police are always biased. Training will increase police consciousness (Lawrence & Hemmens, 2008).

Scenarios that have great risks of manifesting biases such as consent searches and traffic stops should be identified. Researchers have found that blacks express more negative perceptions of the police than whites (Spergel, 2010). The blacks are not satisfied with the police actions, and they don’t trust them. Police are accused of over-policing in the black neighborhoods, and they do not provide enough protection (OpenAthens / Sign in, n.d.).  Police officers should be fair and just to avoid this negative perception.
