Translating Qualitative or Mixed-Methods Research into Clinical Practice

The person that I would approach to formally propose a quality improvement clinical practice transformation project would be my director. The director is responsible for overseeing the department as well as the policies that we follow. This choice is informed by the fact that she is close to the hospital’s executive. Her role will be important in attracting the endorsement of the hospital’s executive. Subramanian (2015) referred to this endorsement as sponsorship and defines the term as the commitment and championship by the executive. Given that the issue of understaffing might necessitate the hiring of new staff or change of schedules, which can be costly to the hospital, the involvement of the director will be critical in attracting the commitment of resources from the executive sponsors.

The specific points that I mention when seeking the support of the director include the impact of burnout on patient care, nurse turnover, and cost on the hospital. I would cite research such as one by Reith (2018), which argued that burnout resulted in higher job turnover and increased thoughts of resigning among physicians. I would also mention to her that patient care quality would likely deteriorate as physicians have more pressing emotional issues. Put differently, emotional exhaustion and lack of attention may lead to a poor focus on patients and hence negative patient outcomes. I would also mention the financial implication of burnouts, which research suggests could be as high as $9billin for hospitals and $14 billion for the healthcare system (Kronos Incorporated, 2017).

I would also mention several solutions that can be adopted by the hospital to reduce burnout. Some of the solutions include rescheduling nursing hours and altering the organizational culture to avoid burnout. On the end, I would mention employing new staff, especially if a majority are of physicians are burdened.
