Near-Death Experience
The research by Dr. Christopher Kerr gives an insight into the near-death experience. In a study that interviewed 1400 patients nearing the end of life, Kerr found that patients described visitation by deceased and well as living persons. However, as they came close to dying, the frequency of visitation from the deceased increased. In the TED talk, Kerr also describes a patient who recalled past traumatic events such as war. Children, on the other hand, have memories of pets since they do not know anyone. The research by Kerr offers an insight into how patients nearing death find closure. The research goes against the idea that death is painful or horrific and paints a hopeful picture. Kerr argues that amidst the horror most patients at the end find closure in past events, visitations and ultimately die peacefully.
The research by Kerr will greatly improve my practice as it will help me come into terms with the reality of death. Knowing that dying patients will find closure in something is hopeful and help ease the tension that comes with experiencing the event. Moreover, the comfort that they find in loved one means that allowing families to have access to dying patients can help them find closure. Fearful patients may also want an explanation of the event. Explaining the events as normal will help them feel less alone during this unusual experience of dying. Kerr’s argument against sterilizing dying patients will also inform my practice. Sterilizing them could interfere with their own dying experience.
Having encountered enraged family members whose patients have died, this research will help me engage such relatives. Moreover, there is a need to advocate for healthcare providers to ask dying patients open-ended questions about dreams with fear of reproach from colleagues or family. A better understanding of the event among practitioners and the general public is important.
