Thesis Statement

            The author, in her the article attempts to show the issues that women faced in their struggle to gain political involvement. Women faced a lot of opposition from men in a male-dominated society. During this period, women were not allowed to share their political views. The authors bring out the existence of various hindrances to women’s efforts to access and utilize legislative powers. The main argument of the author was about the limited abilities that women faced under the male-dominated society.

Method

            The author incorporated various theories within her text. The dominant theory that was used is political. The author tells of the existence of a political nature that limited women’s participation. Also, this political nature barred women from sharing their views or opinions. More so, the theory of capitalism is evident within the text. The fact that women were limited from political participation but went ahead to form alliances for various accomplishments explains the capitalistic nature of the period. Furthermore, the two groups were in conflicts from the previous periods but had to cooperate for many gains.

            Another theory is that gender that appears from the difference in political participation from being a particular gender. The primary reason that barred women from political participation was their gender. Home was considered a place for women and also from the mention of God’s purpose for women (363)[1]. Nationalism is evident within Anne’s text from the roles that women played after acquiring political gains and utilizing the powers that they gained from collective efforts. They showed love for citizens by helping them access some of the basic needs. The author uses case studies to support her thesis by referring to some of the events that took place.

            The author relies on several referencing materials to substantiate her argument. She uses a mix of government documents, specific journals, as well as newspapers for justification purposes. Among the various journals and government sources used to support her thesis statement are the Journal of American History and Laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, respectively.

Strengths

            One of the strengths that the article possesses is that it is very informative and enlightening, with a strong research background. The article enlightens the reader on the events that took place at a certain period back in time. The article, with an entertaining flow, makes the reader more interested in understanding the unfolding of events in that period. One of the new perspectives that I found exciting is the power of collective efforts and its essence in accessing and achieving political considerations. From the text, it is clear that the efforts of these women who came together helped to obtain legislative powers as well as playing a significant role in the provision of services to people. Most importantly, women were able to show their capabilities with power after changing the way men perceived them.

Weakness

            However, the paper has some weaknesses within the text. The first is about the thesis statement that was not clear. The author failed to bring out the thesis statement from a weak thesis formulation clearly. Also, the writer did not clearly outline the objectives that she hoped to achieve. Also, I feel that the author was quite biased and stated only some few good elements of the male’s perception towards women. These are the significant elements that failed to resonate with me as I believe that men significantly contributed to supporting their political ambitions.

Direct Quotations

            Some quotations caught my attention for their significance in Anne’s justification. One of the critical statements is, ‘Organized women often exhibited a good deal of savvy in their quest for favors (372)[2].’ This statement is crucial from the fact that the essence of being organized in a political setting can be of great benefits. The women understood its significance and were able to obtain significant gains. The other statement is, ‘Women’s world, or “sphere,” to use the widely employed term, was to revolve around the private arena of home and family (363)[3]. This statement is crucial in the text from where it is positioned. It shows the reader the underrating of women’s place in previous periods and the need for a change in such perceptions. I want the class to focus on the abilities of women in politics. The question being, should there be more involvement of women in the political arena? If so, why?
