Carbon-Neutral Energy Plan for Ashfordton

Energy conservation measures

The consequences of excessive use of energy are an increase in the carbon footprint, high risks of climate change, high costs of energy, and depletion of non-renewable sources of energy. Some of the ways that Ashfordton could use to reduce their energy usage include the following. First, the community should install the smart street lighting system in all the streets. With the system, the community can schedule lights to be on when needed and off when not needed.  They detect light failure or any maintenance problem; therefore, all malfunctions can be fixed quickly before a lot of energy is lost. The smart street lighting system will reduce street lighting energy. Traditional Street light, which turns on automatically turns on at night and turns off during the day, consume a lot of energy (Huang, 2011).

Secondly, the Ashfordton community should apply thermal insulation materials such as mineral wool on their buildings. The insulators will reduce the amount of heat loss and also unnecessary heat gain. The insulators will, therefore, reduce the energy demands of cooling and heating systems. Retaining the heat produced in homes is a huge problem despite how efficient the heating is. A buffer zone should be created between the cold outdoors and the warm house. The more the heat escapes, the more fuel burned somewhere to generate energy; hence more carbon dioxide produced, which increases global warming (Huang, 2011).

Steps to move toward sustainable energy production

Sustainable energy production meets the demand of the present without comprising the ability of the coming generation to meet their energy demand. For the Ashfordton community to achieve sustainable energy, they should do the following. First is that the community should legislate new clean energy options that will support the adoption of renewable energy (Al-Amir & Abu-Hijleh, 2013).

Secondly, the community should adopt sustainable options for transport because the transports system accounts for more than a third of energy consumption. For example, light and metro rails and electric-powered trains should be used for transportation. If the demand is met by fossil fuel, it will harm the environment (Al-Amir & Abu-Hijleh, 2013).
