Standards of Gerontologic Nursing and the Aging Population

  1. Why it is important to have a scope and standards of practice for gerontological nursing

The main purpose of gerontological nursing is to ensure that they provide the highest quality of care to the older adults within a healthcare system facing an unprecedented increase of their numbers (Giddens et al., 2009). To achieve this, the gerontological nursing have shared knowledge and skills to addresses the full range of needs related to the process of aging and specialized care of older adults. The specialists in the nursing profession collaborate to promote autonomy, wellness, optimal functioning, comfort, and quality of life from healthy aging to end of life which is important because it allows the nurses and specialists to know what to do, when to do it and the time to do it (Giddens et al., 2009).

  • How the scope and standards improves patient outcomes and nursing awareness to this population of patients

The scope and standards improves the patient’s outcome because through it, the specialists will be able to learn from the previous mistakes, weaknesses and strengths (Eliopoulos, 2013). In a situation where there are weaknesses, those who are involved will come up with policies that will help them when handling cases that are related to the old people. The standards will raise the expectation of the patients and the nurses will work hard in order to meet the needs of the patients. It also helps to provide a proper channel of reporting cases that are related to the old people (Eliopoulos, 2013).

  • The significance of global trends in aging populations as it relates to health care for the older adult client

The global trends in aging population are that there are many old people as compared those who are being born. This meant that the insurance companies and pension systems are stretched as they try to give compensations to the aged population (Dall et al., 2013). The government also is forced to budget for them and from this there are limited resources that can be set aside for the young population. As such, it is important to deal with this issue because it is becoming a burden to the healthcare sector in general (Czaja, et al.,2019).
