Major Project InstructionsDue Date: Last Day of Classes
Value: 20%
Over the course of this semester you have learned and practiced many communication and interviewing skills. You know how to open an interview, how to establish rapport, to listen actively and with intent, to pay attention to content, meaning, and feelings, and so on. You know a great deal more about interviewing other people than you did at the beginning of this course.
This final assignment brings it all together by requiring you to demonstrate your skill at interviewing and your ability to obtain information, as well as your self-awareness. It consists of two parts: An interview and report and a self-analysis questionnaire. Together they make up a significant portion of your final grade.
Part A: The Interview and Report (40 Points)
Arrange to interview someone who is a member of another cultural, social or age group, such as a senior citizen, child, or student in the English as a Second Language program. It is best if the subject you choose for the interview is someone you don’t know very well, and are curious about.
Following the rules for conducting an interview…
conduct an interview in which you find out as much as you possibly can about that person
make appropriate notes
prepare a descriptive paper about what you have learned (minimum of 500 words, double spaced and typed (about two pages) with a cover page.
Note: If you choose an underage subject, it is important that you ensure that both the subject and their family understand what you are doing and why. Please obtain written permission from an appropriate person on a form or letter which
outlines the purpose of the interview
states that access to information about the interview is limited to the instructor
confirms that any audio or video tapes (if used) will be erased or destroyed once the assignment is graded and returned
If you are not certain about who to interview, please contact your instructor for guidance.
Part B: Self-Analysis Questionnaire (60 Points)
Part B takes the form of a comprehensive Self-Analysis Questionnaire which is linked on the assignment page that follows. It’s a good idea to refer to the Questionnaire before your interview as a refresher for the skills and techniques you will be using. (You cannot actually complete the questionnaire until you have completed the interview and written Part A of the assignment—the Interview Report). Turn both documents in together by submitting them to the assignment drop box on the next page.
Note that written, behaviourally descriptive comments are required for each section. Blank sections will result in deductions. It is recommended that you complete this as soon as possible after your interview, while details are still fresh in your memory.
An honest self-assessment will be of the greatest value to you. Both positive and critical behaviour specific comments are required for a good grade on this assignment. Marks will be deducted from the total of 60 for areas left blank and on comments which are unrelated to the specific behaviour category.
