Directions: You are expected to make four posts in total. The first post should be a well thought-out response to the prompt. This response should be thorough (at least 100-200 words) and is due by Wed. Next, You are expected to respond to three other students by Sunday. Either go to the posts of other students or respond to students who have posted on your initial thread. Discussion board is my way of taking online attendance. If you miss two discussion boards then you can be removed from the course for attendance violation.
Trade-offs and the Environment
According to Part 1 of Common Sense Economics, “There is no such thing as a free lunch” is one of the main principles of economics. In other words, people face tradeoffs. For example, one trade-off of economic growth is pollution. Economic Growth is inevitably accompanied by “gross domestic by-products”, including dirty air and polluted water, toxic waste, congestion, and noise. The United States is the world’s largest economy and one of the world’s largest polluters. For quick reference about the state of knowledge on global warming: EPA’s Website on Climate Change (opens new window) (plain text link: https://www.epa.gov/climate-research)

Discuss:What responsibility do individuals in the United States have to the rest of the world and to future generations in terms of staving off global warming? In other words, what type of economic sacrifice, if any, should the people of the US make to curb global warming?
Should we allow developing countries to pollute more, or should we hold these countries to the same standards?
When considering this issue, I would like you to think about the opportunity costs.
