When discussing communication and words I find that words mean different things to different people due to exposure. I also find that culture impacts meanings we attach to words as well, which in a sense is part of exposure. Working in the counseling field, body language is a large part of communication and is often interpreted based on our culture. In counseling I am aware of the client’s body language including eye movement, how the client is sitting or walking if they are pacing the floor, and how these movements may be interpreted in the client’s culture. As is noted by Wang and Li (2006) misunderstandings can occur if we misinterpret body language, body space, and body touch. Simple gestures such as handshakes, nodding of the head when listening to a conversation, showing the bottom of the foot when putting feet on a footstool, and waving can be misinterpreted.
