Compose a brief personal narrative. Write a story about a time when you learned a meaningful
lesson about civility.
This assignment encourages you to write an essay that interests and matters to you. The aim is to
use scene and summary to tell a compelling and thoughtful story. Feel free to take risks with
your writing in order to accomplish this goal. This means you may wish to experiment with
figurative language (e.g. similes and metaphors), dialogue, vivid/graphic descriptions, humor,
etc.
See the essays in Best American for potential narrative essay models.
In relation to the rest of the course, Essay 1 acts as a staging ground, the first of many pieces of
writing that will eventually lead to Essay 3, a longer argumentative research paper.
If you choose to use outside sources, cite according to MLA format. This includes a Works Cited
page.
Length: 2 to 3 pages, 12 pt. font, 1” margins.
Follow MLA formatting guidelines. See Purdue Owl for instructions.
