Abortion Debate Study Questions

I will ask the following questions on the day of the debate:

Question for both teams:

At what point (think in terms of weeks here) in the development of the fetus, do you consider the fetus to have the right to life – why do you identify this point where you do?

Question for Pro-Choice team:

Some people are against abortion due to considering the future value of the life of the fetus as equal to that of a birthed human being. Why do you believe the fetus has less value than a birthed human being?

For Pro-Life team:

Some people are against abortion due to considering the future value of the life of the fetus as equal to that of a birthed human being. Why do you believe the fetus has equal value to a birthed human being?

For Pro-Choice team:

Thomson argues that in most cases, the woman’s right of choice outweighs the fetus’ right to life – name two examples in which the woman’s right of choice does NOT outweigh the fetus’ right to life and explain why.

For Pro-Life team:

According to Marquis, the deprivation of future value of abortion means the mother who aborts her fetus is morally wrong – name two examples in which the mother can have an abortion without it being considered morally wrong – why does the deprivation of future value argument fail in these examples?

For Pro-Choice team:

What is a supererogatory act and how does it apply to the abortion debate?

For Pro-Life team:

Why do you think that the mother bringing a pregnancy to term is not a supererogatory act but is something she is morally required to do?
