According to Erikson, the question, “Who am I apart from parents, siblings, etc.” is an essential question for adolescents to ask and answer.  Sometimes this creates tension between the adolescent and others, bringing the adolescent closer to others, or further apart (sometimes both in one day or perhaps one hour).  Understanding what is happening helps one stand alongside the adolescent, in order to be there to help whenever help may be needed.Consider what is important about developing “identity” as an adolescent, what this involves, and how this development affects various areas of life.
