Poe, Edgar Allan. “The philosophy of composition.” (1846)

I disagree with Shen because the article uses nature in writing short stories. Nature is made of beauty, and therefore, he was much interested in beauty than ethics, and he used the beauty to explain his major themes such as love, death, impermanence, and uncertainty.

Shen, Dan. “Edgar Allan Poe’s Aesthetic Theory, the Insanity Debate, and the Ethically Oriented Dynamics of “The Tell-Tale Heart.” Nineteenth-Century Literature 63.3 (2008): 321-345.

From the source, I disagree with Shen that a story like “The Cask of Amontillado” is more about Poe’s interest in ethics rather than his interest in beauty or aesthetics because he holds a non-aesthetic view of the subject matter of prose fiction. The implication is that he considered ethics than the interest in beauty.

Blevins-Le Bigot, Jane. “Valéry, Poe and the Question of Genetic Criticism in America.” L’Esprit Créateur 41.2 (2001): 68-78.

In this article, I disagree with Shen because Poe explains as an author, one should differently writing formats, especially when writing short stories and poems. After all, it is important and will look appealing to those who will read it. “Poe states plainly in his essay that the writer should produce his works always with an eye to please.”

Ki, Magdalen Wing-chi. “Ego-Evil and “The Tell-Tale Heart.” Renascence 61.1 (2008): 25-38.

In this article, I disagree with Shen that Poe was interested in ethics rather than beauty because, in this article, the image of Ego and Evil was used to illustrate the biblical truth that humans love to impose their views on others and fail to notice the plank.

Shear, Walter. “Poe’s fiction: the hypnotic magic of the senses.” The Midwest Quarterly 47.3 (2006): 276.

I disagree with Shen because, in this article, Poe uses settings that show he was not interested in ethics at all. Examples are the “masque of the red death,” which shows aesthetic.
