1. In a hypothetical population, 25 out of every 100 children are born with attached earlobes. Attached earlobes are the phenotypic expression of the recessive homozygous genotype; the heterozygous and dominant homozygous genotypes are expressed as unattached earlobes. Assume that the assumptions of Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium are met. Calculate:
a) the frequencies of the attached and unattached earlobe alleles in this group,
b) the estimated frequencies of the heterozygous genotype, and
c) the frequency of the dominant phenotype.
Please show your work, and given everything you have calculated above, can you use this information to explain what is happening in the population? Why or why not?
2. Many people argue that evolution is “only a theory”. Define a scientific THEORY and then describe how evolution does or does not fit the definition.
3. Explain the process of protein synthesis, including the names of the various steps, where they take place and what form of nucleic acid is involved (ie. DNA, mRNA, tRNA). What can go wrong in this process, what are the results of problems? Do some research and cite a specific example.
4. Choose one of the diseases mentioned in the book, such as sickle-cell anemia or Huntington’s disease. Describe the disease, its prevalence, its relation to the genetics we have been discussing in the class and discuss why it is important to non-medical professionals such as anthropologists
