Assessment Task Instructions

Activity – Presentation of a Quality Improvement Proposal (40%) (10 min)

Due Date –

The aim of this assessment task is to demonstrate your understanding of quality improvement methodology and the application of quality improvement initiatives to improve health care practise and outcomes. It will also give you the opportunity to consider the nurse or midwives role in implementing quality improvement initiatives and the use of evidence-based practice to improve patient outcomes or experience.

For this assessment you are required to create a ten-minute presentation to propose a quality improvement initiative. Your audience is your ward colleagues – it is your responsibility to use this presentation to encourage their engagement with the initiative.

Background – Establish the context/need for the improvement activity. Link the QI activity to one of the eight NSQHS standards.

Proposed Intervention – What change, improvement or review are you proposing? Why are they required and why should the nurses/midwives believe they are important?

Methods – Following a recognised quality improvement methodology outline how you will prepare and conduct the improvement activity. Remember to justify each step with evidence. Acknowledge any anticipated challenges and propose how you will address these.

Evaluation – How will you evaluate the success of the initiative; address why you have chosen this method of evaluation.

Format and Structure

*All three steps must be completed for the submission to be eligible.

The Video and PowerPoint

Formatting your PPT Slides

Develop a presentation using PowerPoint (a maximum of 10 slides including a title slide, a slide for objectives, and a reference slide,).

Use Sans serif fonts (e.g. Calibri or Arial)

Font size of at least 24 points for bullet points

Bold font (34 points) for headings only and italics for emphasis only.

Sentence case for your bullet points (i.e., capitalise the first word only) Font colour that contrasts with the background colour is easier to read. Avoid red and
green contrasts as people who are colour-blind have difficulty distinguishing between
them.

Include no more than five sentences on each slide, aim for five words in each sentence (5×5 rule).

Use plain English, short sentences, and avoid jargon.

Use clear headings that indicate to the reader what they are about to read in the body of the text.

Referencing your PPT Slides

You must include at least 5 references, published within five years, which need to be included in-text and an end-text reference list, these must be either peer-reviewed journal articles or official government websites.

In-text references can be made in a smaller font (8/9 font size).

If you use images in your presentation, you need to reference them.

How to Present PPT Presentation

Using Panopto, record your PowerPoint presentation. The presenter must be visible in the video and begin the video with showing their student card to the camera so that it can be verified by the marker

Remember a large portion of your grade is your presentation skills. Ensure you dress in professional attire (either your uniform or as if going for an interview) and make eye contact with the listener (via the camera). The more interesting and engaging you are, the better your presentation grade will be.
