Brutus’s debate with himself about joining the assassins; the forged letters.

Many have said that the play should have been titled Brutus because the story seems to be about him, his choices, actions, rather than about Caesar. For purposes of the exam, Brutus has not died on his sword, but been put on trial for his part in the conspiracy. You may act as his defense attorney or the prosecutor. There is no right or wrong answer; just make a good argument . Here are some things to take into consideration while you plan your position:

1. Brutus’s debate with himself about joining the assassins; the forged letters.

2.His discussion with the conspirators before the fact.

3. His explanation to the people as to why he believed Caesar had to be killed to preserve the Republic.

4. Although Caesar refused the offered crown three times, he goes to meet with the senators so they don’t change their minds about crowning him as Decius Brutus, not our Brutus, suggests they might.

5. Consider ALL that Antony says at the funeral oration, and what he, Octavius, and Lepidus do/plan about killing their presumed opponents, including family members (!) and 100 (!) senators, and that Antony wants to make changes to Caesar’s will.

6. Antony’s speech about Brutus at the end of the play and Octavius’s offer of full military funeral rites or him.

How long should the answer be? As long as it takes to make a detailed and specific argument, using only the “evidence” in the play. Relying only on my notes and comments won’t be sufficient for a thoughtful answer. You may use the “Ladies and Gentlemen of the Jury” approach, or the essay method if you are more comfortable with that.
