Individual Assignments (HW1)InstructionsIn this individual homework assignment, you will be writing a critique of user interfaces based on Don Norman’s design principles: affordances, visibility, feedback, conceptual models, mappings, constraints, and consistency. You will compare and contrast two competing professional applications that support a similar representative task according to these design principles. You can choose any two applications, but I recommend choosing applications around the course theme, behavior change, to make a better connection between this assignment and your final project.
Professional Application Interface Critique
For your application interface critique, pick two competing applications that support a similar representative task. These applications do not have to be websites; they could be desktop applications, mobile applications, or web applications. Here are a few examples of competing applications:
Two websites for ordering pizza (e.g. Dominos and Papa John’s)
Two mobile applications for recycling management (e.g. iRecycle and OLIO)
Two desktop mail applications (e.g. Apple Mail and Outlook)
You can choose any two competing applications, and I recommend choosing applications around the course theme, behavior change . After choosing your two applications, select a representative task that you can complete with both applications (A good representative task says what you, as the user, want to do, but *not* how* you would do it). Choose a somewhat complex representative task, since your critique will be easier if there are a number of different interactions to analyze. For example, one-click purchasing on Amazon is not a very interesting representative task, because it involves so few interactions. Making a purchase on Amazon with a new credit card would be more interesting, since it involves more interactions.
Once you have your applications and representative task, you will write a critique that compares and contrasts the two interfaces using Norman’s design principles. This critique should include both positive examples where the interfaces applied the design principles effectively and negative examples where the interfaces did not apply the principles effectively.
What to Hand In
Submit a short document (4-8 pages with screenshots) in PDF format that includes the following sections:
Applications: briefly describe the two applications you chose.
Representative Task: describe the task you selected, and why this task is interesting.
Design Principles: Include one section for each of the 7 Norman design principles: (1) affordances, (2) visibility, (3) feedback, (4) conceptual models, (5) mappings, (6) constraints, and (7) consistency. Each section should include:Screenshots showing examples of the principles in the two interfaces.
A paragraph comparing and contrasting each interface’s use of the design principle. Do they apply the principle in a similar way? Or is one interface more effective than the other? The examples and your discussion should demonstrate a deep understanding of the principles.
