CANNABIS AND SOCIETY – 2020-2021 SummerWrite an essay of at least 500 words (roughly about 2 double-spaced typed pages), in which you:
(1) Summarize what you already knew about cannabis/marijuana and its social relevance, prior to enrolling in this class. Be forthcoming in sharing what you know, whether based on your experience “on the streets”, in the dispensaries, in educational settings, or from popular sources like the Internet, television, etc.; and
(2) State what you seek to learn in a course on “Cannabis and Society,” and how you might apply your knowledge after the conclusion of this course.
Do not worry if your prior knowledge is limited, or confined to impressions obtained from family, friends, or popular media. Feel free to share as much or little as you feel comfortable: only your instructor will read your essay, and your grade will not be based upon any particular information that you put forward.
Your essay should be well-written in terms of spelling, grammar and style. Adopt a personal tone, using the first person “I.” Imagine your audience to be a close friend, so that your writing is conversational as opposed to “academic.”
The assessment criteria will be based on the following:
Timeliness of submission (prior to the due date);
Quality of writing (correct use of spelling, grammar, complete sentence structure, etc.);
Readability for a general, non-academic audience (i.e., sensible to a close friend);
Length of at least 500 words;
Inclusion of relevant information that speaks to the assignment’s topic; and
Complies with principles of academic integrity: the writing is your own, and not plagiarized from other sources.
