Capstone and Paper instruction: Due 7/25/2021
Topic: Classism and its negative role in the present-day community.
Each student is expected to plan and execute a capstone presentation and paper at the end of the semester based on a social justice/human rights issue defined earlier in the semester. It should be a capstone experience all that has been learned and explored over the course of the semester. Conceptually, the presentation should serve as the basis for the final paper (that is the final paper and the presentation should be on the same topic). It is strongly suggested that the topic is defined in the first two weeks of class so that work in future sessions can be focused on the social justice/human rights issue can be developed throughout the course. Each class time will devote “Research Time” to explore data bases and share information.
Guidelines
Presentation:
The main goal of the presentation is to effectively convince your audience why this topic is an important social justice/human rights issue and why we should join you in developing social justice allyship regarding this issue. Be as creative as you desire using experiential exercises if you would like.
20-30 minutes in duration. Please be organized, clear, professional and sensitive to your audience in the presentation.
Paper:
4 page minimum-7 page max (APA 7th Edition Format). The 4-7 pages does not include title page and references or any appendices used. APA uses a variety of font sizes. When in doubt, please use 12-point Times New Roman, as it is commonly requested and preferred by instructors.
The paper needs to include the following and may be organized in this manner:
A clear definition of the population you are studying as it relates to issues of diversity, discrimination, oppression and power inequity. ½ -1 page
Identify a specific social justice framework: conceptual or theoretical. Explain how you intend to use it as a lens for writing about your issue. ½-1 page
Clarify the specific social justice/human rights issues you are studying (not just the population identity, but elaboration on the significance of the problem within the context of social justice, human and civil rights (use references from the course, class time research, and time spent researching on your own). Make sure that the majority of your references are from peer-reviewed, evidenced informed materials using quantitative data and/or qualitative case examples that represent the issue. Citations from reports published by nonprofit organizations, local, state or federal agencies and media references are appropriate as well. 1-2 pages
Assess current efforts on solving the issue. Critically reflect on the issue and document what has been done in this area, what has not been done, what is working, what isn’t working, where is social work on the issue, what interventions are in place, what interventions are lacking, etc? (Make sure to use citations to support your argument). 1-2 pages
Your commitment to this issue and your recommendations to the field of social work (your charge to yourself and your colleagues) for activities that can promote equity and fairness (No citations necessary here, these are your reflections and suggestions). 1 page
