Comprehensive Self-Assessment and Self-Reflection

Several theories can be used to comprehensively self-assess and self-reflect one’s career and progress in nursing. Similarly, such theories are paramount to the development of one’s career as they help a person to focus on areas that they are best at and also improve in their weaker areas. As a nurse, I am always guided by two vital holistic theories, Parse and Watson nursing theories and their related concepts. The essay will discuss how the theories and their related concepts have helped me develop as a nurse and how they guide me always.

Theories and Related Concepts

Watson Theory

The theory mainly concerns on how nurses express their professional care to their patients and clients. This theory focuses on humanistic aspects of nursing and how such aspects intervenes with scientific concepts. It is widely accepted that the holistic approach in nursing is the key to nursing care (Wei, 2019). Watson’s theory has always guided me in delivering to the patients through my profession. As a nurse, I have to ensure that my clients and other patients have the best experience while at the health facility by creating a conducive environment that is favorable for their recovering. This includes giving them counselling, ensuring they take their medications as required and also giving the company whenever I can. Thus, it is paramount always to ensure that I am working diligently as a nurse, following the rules and concepts as highlighted by the Watson theory, such as caring as a central requirements for nursing, accepting how the patient is and satisfying the patients’ needs, in ensuring that patients receive the best care at the facility.

Parse Theory

Parse theory of human becoming is a vital theory in holistic nursing. The theory provides a firm foundation through which holistic nursing can be understood clearly. The theory focuses on how nurses should emphasize on the quality of life as described and also lived (Tapp, 2017). The theory posits quality of life as the goal of nursing, and as such nurses should focus on ensuring that every patient receives care in a holistic manner that would improve their quality of life. The theory is paramount to my practice as it enables me to perform the practice in a holistic manner, conducting therapeutic communication, and as such provide a person-centered care to the patients. This ensures that every patient receives the quality of care that is recommended and as such always strives to put their lives in a better health condition. As a nurse, it is vital to always focus on doing and practicing things that are safe and efficient to the livelihood of both the patients and other workmates.

Core Values in Nursing concerning the Selected Theories

As a nurse, it is important to have holistic core values and knowledge that ensures you stand ahead of others. Some of the holistic core values include philosophy and education that ensures you understand what is required of you as a nurse, understanding holistic theories like the Parse theory, which explains what a nurse is expected to do in many instances. A nurse should understand the caring process and the value it holds in nursing. The theories, and in particular the Parse theory, has ensured that I have an enhanced understanding of individual’s live experience, quality of life and also the quality of nursing profession. It is the work of a nurse to ensure that there is holistic communication through treating the whole system and not only constituent parts. This helps nurses to understand the cultural diversity of their clients and ensuring that they also conduct self-care and self-assessment. The theory has also expanded my understanding of the theory of human becoming and also building my knowledge about universal experiences and as such enabling me to contribute to the quality of life.
