Culture, Diversity, Ethnicity, and Race
Culture is the customary beliefs, social behaviors, norms, and customs of a particular group of people. People acquire culture through socialization. Ethnicity is a group of people who identify with each other because of similarities such as common ancestry, language, culture, and history. The race is a category of human beings based on shared social and physical qualities such as color, and facial features (Fernando, 2010). Diversity entails all the characteristics that make people unique such as color, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, language, gender, age, and physical ability (Riccucci, 2018).
Personal culture is unique to each individual. It supports and empowers us. Since I was brought up in an Asian family, my dietary habits have always been mainly plant-based and small portions of meat rarely. The diet involves whole grains, rice fruits, legumes, vegetables, nuts, black and green tea, and plan based alcoholic beverages such as wine and beer.
I believe in the existence of God, and since my childhood, I have been going to church on Sundays. For treatments, my parents prefer traditional treatments such as acupuncture, diet therapy, physical exercises, and meditation. Traditional medicines play an important role in maintaining one’s health; however, for me, I believe modern treatments are more effective because modern medical providers have more understanding of diseases than traditional practitioners.
My Parents uses mostly physical punishment rather than verbal discipline to discipline us. At home, we are expected to obey everything our parents say whether we like it or not. My parents believe that punishing us will make us feel ashamed and thus avoiding future mistakes. In Asian culture, also aging is highly valued, and I grew up knowing that I must care for the elderly in my family
I believe that child happiness should be a top priority for parents, and inductive strategies should be used in disciplining a child. However, the traditional beliefs recommend Physical punishments, which I believe that it makes a child afraid of their strict parents and not able to speak their minds. I also believe in modern forms of treatments that involve the application of scientific knowledge.
