Assignment is to prepare an analytical research paper on a current legal issue in the hospitality industry. An analytical research paper requires analysis, not just description. You should learn about the topic through research, analyze the information, and then inform the reader. To analyze means to break a topic or concept down into its parts to inspect and understand it, and to restructure those parts in a way that makes sense to you. If there are different opinions, you should report all of them; if there is a controversy, you should explain what both sides believe.

Analytical papers are governed by a thesis, a sentence that establishes the controlling
idea or main point of your paper, but do not include the author’s stance on any issues. The paper is meant to offer a well-supported critical analysis without necessarily persuading the reader to any particular way of thinking. The paper is to be based on information obtained from a variety of sources such as books, periodicals, pamphlets, and on-line resources. Primary sources are original documents or research, including speeches, letters, interviews, official records, creative works and artifacts. If writing about a poem, the text of the poem is considered a primary source.

Secondary sources include interpretations or analysis of primary sources and are
removed from the event or topic. Examples of secondary sources include textbooks, criticisms and newspaper or magazine articles. You should think critically, not only about the subject, but also about the sources you find. Analyze your sources by evaluating their authority, credibility, accuracy, and objectivity. Remember that just because something is in print or on the Internet, it is not necessarily “the truth.”
