Follow the prompt and submit your discussion post by Friday for 12 points
Respond thoughtfully to 2 of your peers by Sunday for 10 pointsBe aware: Canvas doesn’t let me set a new deadline for the responses, so Canvas will automatically consider your responses “late”–don’t worry though, I don’t care about that.
Read the rubric to understand what qualifies as a substantial post and reply!
Discussion Prompt (200-300 words)Getting Started:
Recall Thrasymachus’ speech about why it’s better to be unjust than just (343b-344d).
Pay attention to how Thrasymachus defines justice, “I assert that what’s just is nothing other than what’s advantageous to the stronger.” (338c). He clarifies, “[…] what’s just is exactly what I was saying from the beginning, what’s advantageous to the stronger, while what’s unjust is profitable and advantageous to oneself” (344c).
Prompt: Is Thrasymachus correct that it’s better to be unjust rather than just?
Respond to Socrates’ arguments against Thrasymachus (from Book I) of the Republic. Are his arguments convincing?Alternatively, you may also utilize James Baldwin’s essay (Links to an external site.) from the Week 2b optional reading list. Use real world examples to help support your reasoning.
When referencing ideas from the Republic cite the line numbers in the margins. For example, (Plato 343b-344d).
Respond in 200-300 words. Read the rubric before responding.
Don’t forget to post your word count at the end!

This is not a research project, so no outside sources please
Students must post before seeing student repliesTo help promote independent work, you cannot revise or delete your postsSome try to cheat the system by posting a blank post, reading what others have written, and then synthesizing a reply based on what others have written. I will deduct 10 points for blank submissions.
Best practices:Don’t type your response directly into Canvas. Instead, use word processing software (Microsoft Word, Google Docs, etc) and save it first.
Copy paste your response into Canvas and hit “Submit”
There is no need to sign your name at the end of your post (we can see your name next to your post)
Treat this like a real conversation. There is no need to say things like “Great job on the post!” No one says these things in real life conversations.
