Ethics in Technical Writing
In this application assignment, you will write a white paper discussing ways in which technical writing can be approached in an ethical manner. A white paper is an authoritative report or guide that informs readers concisely about a complex issue and presents the issuing body’s philosophy on the matter. It is meant to help readers understand an issue, solve a problem, or make a decision.
Course Objectives
• Compose technical writing pieces using appropriate design principles, formatting, and stylistic features.
• Summarize the ethical responsibilities associated with technical communication.
• Outline and apply the technical writing process.
Directions:
1) Save and print the Module 2 Application PDF.
2) Create a paper in a Word or text document for your response. Use 12-point Arial or Times New Roman font. Follow APA (6th edition) format for the paper, title page, references page, and in-text citations.
3) Develop an introduction and conclusion for your paper.
4) Follow the directions to submit your final Word or text document.
Step 1. Select
Select a target audience for your white paper.
Step 2. Research
Research the topic of technical writing and ethics. You may want to begin with the presentations, readings, and learning objects in the course and then branch out from there. Use at least three sources outside the course. The purpose of your research is to find out how and why technical writing should be approached in an ethical manner and how technology and the digital age are complicating this approach.
Step 3. Compose
Compose a white paper of no more than five pages in which you inform your selected target audience about the complex issue of technical writing and ethics. Include your philosophy related to the topic and construct your paper so that it guides the audience in understanding the issues, problems, and specific challenges and how to overcome them. Use real-life examples in your paper to increase relevancy and application.
