Environmental sociology is the sociological study of humans and the environment. One major emphasis of environmental sociology is that environmental problems are largely the result of human activity and human decision-making. A second major emphasis is that environmental problems disproportionately affect low-income people and people of color. These effects are called environmental inequality and environmental racism, respectively. There are all kinds of viewpoints that can be explored from the philosophical – “the moral obligations and decision of man.” Or you may just be interested in the current effects and solutions from the experiential perspective (what can we expect? and how can we control it?) – the practical matters. Maybe you’ve never considered it seriously because you believe it to be more political than realistic. All of these perspectives exist and overlap-add that to an individual’s unique way of thinking, and we are diverse and complicated. For this week’s discussion share with your classmates what your foremost concerns are in terms of our environmental future. Reference your ideas here, remember the discussion area is to encourage application, not just “talk” about something from instinct, limited popular knowledge, journalism, etc. Remember as ever, in this last discussion of the term…. this is the academic way…!
