Total: 50 points

Assignment objective: Forecasting fashion trends is a key aspect of fashion and is essential to the success or failure of any fashion-oriented business. The objective of this project is to help you develop skills in analyzing and reporting on fashion trends. Through comprehensive research, trend interpretation, and effective communication, you will create a detailed trend report for the upcoming season (Fall 2024).

Instructions: To develop an understanding of fashion forecasting process, create a digital moodboard and line collection reflecting Fall 2024 fashion trend. Use Canva or PowerPoint slides to create moodboard. Do not create more than TWO slides for this assignment.

To learn using Canva (partially free tool), visit this website and watch the video (https://www.canva.com/learn/make-a-mood-board/). This is an easy tool and used often for creating moodboards. If you have trouble using Canva, you can also develop a moodboard using PowerPoint slides.

What is a Moodboard?

A moodboard is a physical or digital collage with 5-7 images. It is a collection of visual materials that evoke a particular theme, style or concept. Designers, illustrators, photographers, filmmakers and all types of creative professionals create moodboards to communicate their vision for a project. They can be a powerful starting point in any creative process that captures the essence of something before committing to the final design. So, get yourself engaged in the process of creating fashion and have FUN!

Follow the steps below to develop a moodboard and develop a design collection. Use TWO PPT slides, one for moodboard and another for line collection. You may combine two into one slide but make sure to include all information required for completing this assignment. Be Creative in presenting your work! Refer to example below to understand the steps of developing moodboard and line collection.

Step-1: Trend research and design inspiration: Conduct trend research to understand the prevailing fashion trends. You have conducted trend research in Assignment-1 about Fall 2024, so you have pretty much completed step-1. You may consider expanding your understanding of prevailing trends by reviewing additional fashion news, magazines articles, blogs, movies, tik-tok and social media posts, look around and observe what people are wearing around you.

Step-2: Design Inspiration: Look for things around you for design inspiration. Design inspiration may come from any object such as a fruit, print, nature, artwork, architecture, museum etc. In the example below, images of young girls, a lady under sub umbrella and sea flora reflect design inspiration. You may consider picking a single image or few images that inspire your moodboard and collection. Make sure those images reflect the colors you have picked for your collection and are incorporated in your garment pieces.

Step-3: Theme Development: Identify an overall theme based on design inspiration. See the example below for theme of “Garden of the Sea”. Make sure the overall theme reflects the mood of the prevailing trends and align with your designs.

Step-4: Identify Target Consumers: Identify a consumer group for which you are creating this collection. Include a brief description of target customer (3-5 sentences). See example below.

Step-5: Identify clothing, elements, and accessories such as below in developing line collection.

Color: Include color palette (3-5 colors) based on images used for design inspiration. It may include hues and shades or multiple colors. This may include solid colors, patterns, prints etc.

Fabric and yarn swatches (name of fabrics/yarns or pictures or actual fabric swatches that represent upcoming trend)

Describe overall silhouette: For this you may include 2-3 sentences on garment style or detail like neckline, collars, sleeves, waist etc., texture, silhouette

Optional: You may include accessories such as jewelry, handbag, headgear, sunglasses, etc.

Note: Remember to apply the elements and principles of design in creating moodboard. Color must make sense and augment the theme. Consideration should be given to hue, value, and intensity. Background color must effectively showcase the decorative elements, fabrics, and silhouettes. Graphic balance is essential. All shapes must be in proportion to the board. A border, visual or implied, creates unity. Images should speak to the mood of the trend you are trying to describe. Layout should be logical and aesthetically pleasing. Simplicity should be used to convey the story. Boards should not be crowded with too many elements.
