Family:  Who needs it?This Discussion will focus on the following readings from Rereading America:
“Looking for Work” by Gary Soto
“What We Really Miss About the 1950s” by Stephanie Coontz
“Aunt Ida Pieces a Quilt” by Melvin Dixon
“The Color of Family Ties” by Naomi Gerstel and Natalia Sarkisian
The format for this Discussion will be a little different than before.  Please be sure to follow the directions.
Ideally, you will want to read all of the selections.  This will allow you to make connections between them, and this could help strengthen your responses.
Choose one of the readings.  You will see them listed below as their own topic.
For whichever reading you choose, there will be a specific question for you to answer.  This will be your initial post.
Your response should be very thorough; you will want to make reference to the text itself, although you do not necessarily have to use quotes.
Your initial response should be about 150-175 words.
After your initial response, go ahead and respond to two of your classmates for a different reading than the one you responded to.  This ensures your ability to connect to the other readings.
Your responses to your classmates should be about 100-125 words each add to the discussion (i.e. reflecting on their response, asking questions, etc.) rather than just saying, “That’s cool” or “That’s interesting.”
You must post your own response before you can see the responses of your classmates.
Your initial posting is worth 10 points, and your responses to your classmates is worth another 10 points.
