Final Project HORT 1250
The first set of crops consists of creating a schedule to propagate annual seed plugs
(assume the seeds will be germinated in either a 128 or 288 size plug tray). Determine
when to plant each species for a February 1 delivery date. For each crop answer the
following questions:
• Growth media temperature needed
• Will supplemental lighting be required?
• Number of days in each of the four stages of plug growth
• Date to plant the seed
The crops you will plant are:
• Alyssum (Lobularia martima)
• Asparagus densiflorus Sprengeri
• Marigold (French) (Tagetes cvs.)
• Ornamental Pepper
• Snapdragon (Antirrhinum majus)
The second set of crops are trees to be propagated from seed. For each of the species
answer the following questions:
• When to collect the seed
• Seed treatment required
• Container size to use for planting
• Recommended growth media
• Is bottom heat required
• Expected length of time from seed collection to when germination occurs.
The trees you will research are:
• Acer rubrum
• Cornus florida
• Quercus alba
• Quercus rubra
The final set of crops you will plan to propagate are cuttings. The data you need to
gather for each species is:
• Time of year to take cutting
• Type of cutting used (softwood, semi-hardwood, hardwood, herbaceous)

• Is wounding required
• Type of rooting hormone to use (IBA, NAA, ppm)
• Length and dimeter of cutting
• Number of leaves on cutting
• Recommended growth media to use
• Is bottom heat required
• Expected length of time when roots will begin to form
The plants you will research are:
Abelia grandiflora
Camellia japonica
Cryptomeria japonica
Gardenia jasminoides
Lagerstromia indica
