This course has taught me many things. I appreciate that this program offers us classes that teach clinical skills as well as practical skills for how to practice as a nurse practitioner and the legalities and policy within the field. This class gave me a better understanding of the legal description and scope of practice within my state of Texas. What exactly a collaborative agreement is and how to function within one with an MD. Introduction to IOM and their recommendations specifically to nurse practitioners scope of practice, leadership and changes within the healthcare system and our role within that. Leadership programs and models for my transition to a higher level of leadership after exiting the bedside. I built upon my knowledge and understanding of the APRN consensus model. I continued to review the quality of care delivered by the nurse practitioner and their effectiveness. Introduction into billing and charting with systems such as CPT codes. This was especially helpful as it coincided with assignments in my Advanced Assessment course. Finally I developed my own views on practice ownership and ethical decision making and what type of ethical dilemmas I may face.
This list could have been much longer. These are just a few highlights from the course. Each week we addressed topics that had been touched upon in other courses but this course allowed me to dig deeper. These topics were often things I didn’t even know existed such as CPT coding processes for building your own practice and insurance procedures. This class taught me the importance of being a well rounded nurse practitioner. This career is not just providing diagnosis and medication management but being a holistic provider of care.

My takeaways from this course are regarding obtaining my first position as an NP. I feel the legalities of contract negotiations was extremely helpful. The videos on how to traverse the interview and negotiation process gave some very insightful information. I truly appreciated the way the course delves into different ways to practice post graduation, such as starting your own practice a few years down the road. From Silence to Voice reinforces the need to educate the public on the nursing profession and the skills they process to ensure the public’s safety and health.
