What is one current challenge and/or conflict that has been arising between the adolescent and parent? (Note: The adolescent and parent/caregiver may name different challenges/conflicts.)

Sarah is currently wearing a back brace due to an injury.

Because of it:

She can not wear cute clothes

It is hot and uncomfortable

She can not go to dance, and she can lose her skills

She needs to wear it under her bridesmaid dress

She couldn’t fully participate in her recital

She could only perform one dance at her national dance competition

She can not stay at Nationals because of it, and she is missing out on the social events, which means she will be excluded from photos and social media about it

She looks ugly wearing it

She looks fatter than what she is

How has this challenge/conflict been managed by each party?

Begging her mom to not make her wear the brace

Restricting time in public because of how bad she looks

Only wanting to be with certain friends

Not participating in PT because she “doesn’t need it”

What is their perspective of what is going on?

Mom is overreacting

Mom does not want her to have a good summer

Mom wants to control what she is doing

Her back is not really that hurt

What do they think their child/caregiver’s perspective is of what is going on (e.g., if the adolescent says that there has been a conflict over the clothes they wear to school, ask the adolescent what they think their parent/caregiver thinks of the situation and why they have the opinion they do).

She thinks her mom is exaggerating the back injury. She believes this because she thinks her mom wants to control everything she does, and this is one way of doing that. For example, with the back brace, Sarah would “not be caught dead” wearing a crop top or bikini, and since her mom doesn’t want her to wear either, so she wins. She also thinks that since the brace is “making” her stay home, she is helping care for her sibling, which helps her mom without her asking.
