Research has shown that mental illness has an impact on life expectancy. Actually, the life expectancy for people with serious mental disorders (SMD) in the United States is reduced by 10-25 years (https://www.who.int/mental_health/management/info_sheet.pdf). The interesting finding is the fact that people with disorders including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and major depression (all risk factors for suicide), do not die from suicide. Instead, they die from same diseases as the remaining population, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, stroke, cancer, and pulmonary disease. Considering risk factors for individuals suffering from SMD, discuss reasons why they die from medical conditions rather than suicide. Use at least two evidence-based resources to support your ideas.
