Guidelines for Hermeneutical Paper for Intro. To The New Testament Class
Instructions:
Select a passage from the syllabus (at least a chapter in length) and follow the outline below.
Use Times New Roman 12 point font. This paper will be submitted through blackboard.
Introduction: 2-3 paragraphs
Answer the following questions…
1. What passage did you select and why?
2. What is your original understanding of the text?
3. What presumptions have you made or do you have about this text?
4. Are you aware of any embedded theology (something you believe because
your family taught you or a pastor/youth pastor said was true) about this passage?
Exegesis: 1 page
Through careful examination, write about the authors understanding and investigation regarding
their intent of the message. What style is used (parables, metaphors etc…) to communicate the
authors message? Describe the context, who is speaking, who is the intended audience or reader?
Discuss the authors hope and outcome of the text.
Exposition: 1 page
Communicate to your readers the application of the text and the relevance to a person or persons
in today’s culture.
Conclusion: 2-3 paragraphs
Carefully reviewing your pre-understandings
1. What assumptions or attitudes have changed?
2. What new revelation have you discovered?
3. Do you recommend any changes in how this passage is presented to
congregations, classrooms or children?
