The end of Ch. #3 in your training manual, our textbook, discusses the issue of aliteracy–that is, when we know how to read (an are not illiterate), but we choose not to. Read “Leisure reading in the U.S. is at an all-time low” from the Washington Post (Links to an external site.) and then read the Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 excerpt. ( You will find the pdf versions of both in the module for this week. I’ve made the Washington Post article a live link in these directions, but if you can’t get to the article because of any reason, such as a paywall, please find a pdf version below. ) Then, post a well-thought out comment in the forum addressing whether or not you think the ideas in 451 are the reason we have an aliteracy problem in the US and if so, if Bradbury’s novel predicted the reasons for this problem.
A successful post will do the following:
1. State your opinion about whether or not there is an aliteracy problem in the US.2. State you opinion about whether or not Bradbury predicted the reason for any aliteracy we have in the US. 3. Include a quote with quotation marks around it from the Washington Post article, and build in what this quote is helping you prove or support.4. Include a quote with quotation marks around it from the Fahrenheit 451 excerpt, and build in what this quote is helping you prove or support.5. Respond to at least one other person’s post.
