Lewinsky’s Speech

Lewinsky, through her speech, talks about her past that contains a saddening ordeal that she experienced while working in the White House. In her remarks, she approaches her audience tactfully by narrating, in a funny way, how she made her mistake. Despite being a tough period and one that she would not want to remember, she recounts how the events unfolded during that time. As such, she effortlessly narrates to an alert audience (TED, 2015).

Since a popular public opinion is believed to be the right way, any individual daring to speak against it is more likely also to face backlash. This situation might lead to the fear of doing what is right. Another danger is the negative public perception towards the person. The public is likely to distance itself and look down on you due to different ideologies.

Lewinsky’s objective is to inform the audience as well as the general public on the dangers of online harassment and other forms of attacks from social media. She goes further to give instances where individuals have experienced similar attacks and the consequences (TED, 2015). I think Lewinsky was able to achieve her objective as she managed to speak boldly and provide examples of the impacts of social media attacks besides her own story. Furthermore, she mentions the organizations that people can reach out to in such cases.

Bravery fits here since Lewinsky managed to grow from her sad story and speak boldly against the acts that she faced. The fact that she can still stand in front of an audience and narrate her story shows how brave Lewinsky is. Lastly, various reputations may hinder effective communication. One of them is that of being a liar. When people believe that you are not always honest or truthful with them, they gain a negative perception towards you. The other reputation is about lacking adequate information. If people feel that you lack enough evidence research to support your points, they may question your ability to provide reliable information, and therefore fail to take you seriously.
