Maximum
Word Length: 2,500

Unless otherwise specified, the word count
is for the main body of the text and ignores the reference list and
appendices.  If you exceed the word
length you will be penalised.  For details
see the Management School Handbooks.

Please note that SUMS
does not have a word count tolerance – it is a stated maximum as outlined above.
Requirements:

Describe and critically evaluate
a training experience that you know about (e.g., that you, a relative or friend
have experienced). A training intervention is an activity or a set of
activities, designed to improve the performance of individuals and
organisations.  You must not use an existing case study but a
case that is known to you through your own work or that of a friend. Answer the
following about this development intervention:

1.
Describe it (fairly briefly).

2.
How was the need for this intervention identified?

3.
How consistent was the intervention with relevant
theory and literature on this subject (i.e. was it designed and implemented in
a manner consistent with theory)?

If there are inconsistencies, please note and explain why you think this
might be the case – could improvements be made to the intervention based on the
literature or are there other explanations?

4.
How (if at all) was the impact of the intervention
evaluated by the organisation? What were the consequences of the choice of
evaluation activities for the various stakeholders of the organisation?

The essay does not have to be structured in exactly the same order as
the questions above (for instance, you might combine some questions into one
section or change the order slightly).
However, all the questions need to be addressed somewhere in the
essay. Note also that the intervention does not have to be successful, and you
do not have to say the module content is marvellous and solves all problems.
The assignment is intended to reflect your ability to analyse and evaluate,
blending experience with theory, and using constructively critical argument.

·
Assignments must display knowledge of the relevant
theory, concepts and literature;

·
Theories and concepts must be applied to discussing
the assignment question;

·
Assignments often focus upon contentious and
problematic issues; therefore they must contain a well-argued case with an
appropriate structure as well as obeying academic conventions;

·
Students should show an application of theory to
practice.
